Engaged Buddhism

established 8/20/2008 7:54 am | updated 8/20/2008 7:54 am

We all know that Buddhism is highly stylized by the act of sitting meditation. This group seeks to explore how we take that sitting meditation and do what the Buddha taught: make your sitting the rest of your life. How do we engage the teaching of Buddha in social activism? How does it affect our jobs, our volunteer activities, our social life.

GROUP MESSAGES:

Oftentimes I think we get overwhelmed at being socially active. So many choices, so little time. The beginning however is easy. It begins with you. Let me quote Thich Nhat Han from "The Path Of Compassion,"

"We need such a person to inspire us with calm confidence, to tell us what to do. Who is that person? The Mahayana Buddhist sutras tell us that you are that person. If you are yourself, if you are at your best, then you are that person. Only with such a person - calm, lucid, aware - will our situation improve."

The path to peace in this world starts with each of us doing inner disarmament work. It will naturally flow out from us to others.
