The popular saying, “Sleep over your problems” is not a cliché. Latest research shows that sleeping over a problem is the best thing to do when you are ridden with doubts. This theory has a sound scientific basis. When you are faced with hard choices and the problem is so overwhelming that it defies every logic or calculations, just go to bed and let your gut instinct become active. A modicum of research evidence suggests that unguarded cerebral activity may do a better job than the conscious raking of brain, to find a solution for your problem.
There are basically two modes of thought: Conscious and Unconscious. In conscious thoughts we contemplate a particular issue or question, mentally list all the relevant information, weigh up all the pros and cons, and then come to a rational decision. Read more...

It's always very interesting to read and hear all the pieces written and spoken about 'peace'. The vast majority seem to speak either of peace in opposition to war or violence (and therefore still caught in the dualistic way of thought), or as having to be 'imposed' by whatever means possible on violence (which is an act of violence itself!).
Is peace perhaps beyond all of this, beyond opposites, beyond imposition, indeed beyond any word or description? Might it be the ground, or source, in which everything is allowed to be, just as it is, without any thinking required? Reality always seems 'peaceful' enough in itself, but then becomes violent when our thinking about it starts to run riot and separates us from reality. Belief in our thoughts as reality, rather than recognizing them as a tiny part of it, remains unexamined, like a crime which nobody has approached to solve. With deep investigation of these beliefs, entrenched in humanity for millennia, the truth is revealed and reality is allowed to be, and Life flows without interruption, in peace! Then there is no imposition of any sort: things (including people) are allowed to be, yet action flows clearly from this peace, when there is recognition of the wholeness of Life, without division, without the separation of 'what is' and 'what should be'. Without the wish/need to impose anything on anybody/anything, where is the need for violence? Violence may still happen, but action can take place fearlessly and effortlessly to bring it to a peaceful end. How can peace be brought about by the violence of imposition, which is as much dictatorship as any we have previously chosen to call by that name? When Life is allowed to live itself totally and unconditionally, then there may be the arising of and living in a peace beyond all concepts, beyond all thoughts. Read more...

Internet. De grootste uitvinding uit de moderne tijd wordt het wel eens genoemd. Het world wide web biedt inderdaad vele mogelijkheden. Bijvoorbeeld in dictaturen waar kranten, televisie en andere klassieke media worden gecontroleerd door de staat. In die landen kan internet een ander geluid laten horen.
Neem een land als China. Doordat de meeste Chinese media een lijntje hebben met de Communistische Partij, en er op die manier weinig tot geen ruimte is voor kritische berichtgeving, kwamen er met de komst van internet kansen op informatieverspreiding en discussie. Steeds meer Chinezen hebben een weblog waarop ze publiceren. Een voorbeeld van de invloed van internet in China is de zaak Sun Zhigang. In 2003 werd deze 27-jarige grafisch ontwerper opgepakt omdat hij zijn identiteitsbewijs niet op zak had – hij was het slachtoffer van de structurele harde aanpak van de vele binnenlandse migranten in China die naar de steden trekken. In de gevangenis zou het personeel zijn medegevangenen tegen hem hebben opgezet. Hij werd in elkaar geslagen en stierf aan de verwondingen. Suns vader deed niet lang daarna zijn verhaal in de Southern Metropolitan Daily. Verbitterd zei hij onder meer: ‘Als hij niet naar de universiteit was gegaan, was hij minder geleerd geweest. Hij zou niet hebben geklaagd over zijn rechten, waardoor hij niet zou zijn vermoord.’ Read more...
Het artikel uit de stapel weekendkranten waar mijn oog het eerst bij bleef hangen was het interview dat oud collega Dick Wittenberg had in NRC Handelsblad. In de bijlage Zaterdag&cetera op pagina 4 en 5 doet hij verslag van zijn gesprek met een van de meest gezaghebbende politieke columnisten in de wereld, Thomas Friedman die al meer dan een kwart eeuw voor The New York Times schrijft. Friedman was in Londen om zijn nieuwe boek te promoten: Hot, Flat, and Crowded – een van de beste journalisten van NRC die vrijwel alle genres van het vak beheerst, van reportage tot interview, van column tot sportverslag – nam de wereld met hem door. Een man met charisma stond dinsdagavond 14 oktober op het toneel van het Event Centre in Aalsmeer. En het was een genoegen daar van dichtbij naar te kijken en luisteren. Al Gore had op dat toneel de uitstraling die ik kende van de films, de tv-optredens en de clips op internet. En charisma is het eerste woord dat me te binnenschiet als je hem in één woord zou moeten beschrijven. Als je meer woorden mag kiezen, komen daar inspiratie en bezieling bij, en daadkracht en overtuiging.
Gore maakte dus indruk, en niet alleen op mij. Hij had wel even nodig om er in te komen voor een uitverkochte zaal. Hij worstelde in de eerste minuten wat met de warmte, zijn jetlag en de namen van de Nederlanders die hij wilde bedanken voor hun rol in de avond. Zo werd Ivo Opstelten gebombardeerd tot burgemeester van Rottenburg, maar Gore was ad rem genoeg om snel in te spelen op het gegniffel in de zaal dat daarop volgde. Read more...
