Peace one day

The video which appears below was posted on a friend’s Facebook page. It features British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley and his extraordinary journey to create one calendar day a year for peace. That day has been established as September 21st.

Watch Jeremy and then I’ll share my observations:

When I first saw the name of the video, I felt a sinking in my heart. This was before I watched it. The reason is because I took it to mean that we’d have peace one day, some day, but not any day near today. How wrong I was.

What Mr. Gilley has done is draw a line in the sand. “If we want to change from a culture of war to a culture of peace, we will have to unite.” He’s right. And, bless him, he had and held and acted upon his vision for the first of many Peace Days since 2002. It was proposed at the United Nations and passed unanimously.

P.S. It’s no mistake that he chose the Autumnal Equinox, a 24-hour period when night and day - and all people - are equal.

Julia Ward Howe tried to get the same thing going back in 1870. She was disturbed by the death and carnage of the civil war and wanted to create a day for motherhood and peace. The idea did not stick, but it helped Mother's Day get established. To our shame it seems we could not understand the peace part, but we sure could understand the opportunity to sell people things. Peace is a choice and that takes thought not money.

Very interesting read. if anyone is interested:

I'm going to see if I can get my 5 year olds kindergarden class to think about making peaceful choices on September 21st.

Yes, an inspiration that launched many initiatives. Important posting.

I was fully engaged in a collective gathering on International Peace Day that acknowledged the reality of International Peace Day and Ambassador John McDonald who helped bring his vision into reality.
